1 year after the Flood - The Mayor to dedicate high water marks through out Columbus
Its been almost one year after the flood hit Columbus Indiana and surrounding areas. Many people are still rebuilding their lives and some have just left their homes since they couldn’t afford or didn’t have insurance to cover the damages. The city is working on putting together an event on June 7th starting around 3:30 at the 17th Street Bridge where the Mayor and Commissioners will read a Proclamation and dedicate a high water marker. This same Proclamation and dedication will also be done at 4:30 in Mill Race Park at the wooden bridge. At 5pm the church bells will ring for one minute across the county to end the year anniversary of the Flood. The Pipers will also play and the city is thinking about inviting people to bring a picnic lunch to have at Mill Race park. Of course we are still hoping going to have the Flood DVD Photolicious Keepsakes and CPS staff along with the community put together played at YesCinema on the 7th at 1:30, this is a free showing. Don’t forget we are still seeking stories, Photos, videos to place online at www.columbusflood2008.com currently we have over 2200 photos. The Republic created a Flood book and charge $29.95 but the feedback is already pouring in that the quality of photos just isn’t there and it wasn’t worth the money. So with that in mind, we are going to be selling our best version. Our book will come in two flavors hard back and soft back with 158 pages. The pricing however will be a little higher than The Republic’s version since ours is being exported out to a company and the overall cost to create is higher. What that means is better product, and as you can see from the 2200 photos submitted to us we have the product to make an outstanding book. The prices are as follows. A soft cover is 39.95 A Hardcover is 54.95 If you pre-order today you could have it by Christmas 08. Images to come soon… if you are interested please Read more at http://columbus1.ath.cx/index.php?page=11 If you have submitted photos for the DVD, please keep in mind this policy. Read that here. http://columbus1.ath.cx/donate/?page_id=84 New photos, Take a look
Michele Freed submitted photos of the Hospital Inventory. The Hospital Furniture is not sterile enough for hospital use after flood. It will be taken to a facility used for urban warfare training.
Take a look at her photos… Thanks Michele for sharing… http://columbus1.ath.cx/donate/?page_id=238 Production Closed
DVD Production Closed and will no longer be sold. The goal of helping the flood victims has been successful during the time of our production, we have however been told bootlegging of our DVD has been occurring which is one thing, but the bootleggers have been selling the duplicate copies. It has been happening since the first production version 1 but we continued creating them. We have sold hundreds and some have even made it to other states. We have raised approximately $2300-$2400 which has been donated to the Heritage Fund for the Community Disaster Relief Fund. In the near future the DVD may be online for download, but that is to be determined. We are still interested in your flood photos. If you have any to share please email me at columbusind@gmail.com Papa John’s Pizza Submitted photos
We would like to thank Papa John’s Pizza and their staff for the donation of photos showing the damage they suffered during the flood that took place on June 7th 2008 along with the rebuilding of their business. Unfortunately due to a computer failure we lost the all the photos we scanned into our system. Since the loss our system has fully recovered, but we were unsuccessful in recovering the photo’s Papa John’s Pizza and staff submitted. If you are interested in looking at their photos, please visit their establishment in East Brook Center next to Save a Lot. Skopos returned home, artist Richard says “I’m relieved to see it home”
I had every intention of being at the resurrection of Skopos today from 10am, I was going to stay until Skopos was placed back home, but I couldn’t make and with the heavy downpour I thought for sure it would be placed on hold until the weather subsided. Everyone who attended took many, many photos of the sculpture being removed from the river, but what I got was much more, a photo of the artist next to his work of art titled Skopos Greek word loosely translated as “The Watcher “.
I was able to speak with Richard after taking his photo, and I asked what his inspiration was for creating his sculpture. Richard said his inspiration was “traditional art forms, nature and Henry Morris’s for creating the arch” titled Chac Mool or know here in Columbus as “Large Arch” which sits in front of the library. Skypos was created using 3/16” thick steel plates that were welded together to make the sculpture one piece back in 1979. Richard said “I have always loved Henry Morris’s arch and this is kind of my version of an outdoor tree substitute.” |
